So, great… I just remind you of
your mortality and tell you to stop smoking.
What the H kind of posts are these?
Here’s the rub, as a
chiropractor I am concerned with 3 main facets of health that all contribute to
our well-being: physical stressors, chemical
stressors and emotional stressors. DD
Palmer, the inventor of chiropractic described them as Traumas, Toxins and
Thoughts. The stuff you put in your
body, the tax your system experiences when your emotions overwhelm you, and the
major and minor traumas we experience in our everyday life all add up.
Daniel David Palmer, the founder of Chiropractic |
So how do each impact our
lives? Well, our diet and habits fall
under the chemical… you get out what you put in. If we’re eating McDonalds and drinking a
Iitre of cola a day, we are not going to be able to function at our best. We won’t be able to heal at our best
either. Smoking dehydrates our discs,
not to mention all the effects tobacco has on the rest of our system. The rabbit hole for the toxins part of
chiropractic can get incredibly deep.
Emotionally, many of us are
living a very high-strung life. When we
are emotionally stressed-out, our bodies go into Fight of Flight mode, which is
survival mode. The other side of that
coin is the growth and repair mode, called rest and digest as well. When we are always running from a tiger, we
don’t have time to grow and heal. When
we get stressed at work and on the commute and at home, our systems think we
are in danger the entire time. It can
play a big role in why you can’t seem to get over colds, or that you seem to
always have tight shoulders.
The physical traumas we endure,
like a “thrown-out back” are what we associate chiropractic with the most. Sitting at a desk for 6 to 10 hours a day,
sitting in a car on your daily commute and sitting watching tv for hours a week
causes micro-trauma to our bodies. Flick
your knee, and it doesn’t hurt. Keep
flicking your knee in the same spot over and over and over and eventually, it’s
going to start to not feel good. Another
analogy related to our new life style is text neck and holding a can of
corn. Take a can of corn and hold it out
from your body so your arm is parallel to the floor. At first, it isn’t heavy; it’s a can of
corn. After a few minutes…or hours…or
days, that can will start getting heavy.
These small, seemingly insignificant traumas in our daily lives not only
make us more susceptible to major traumas like a herniated disc, but after
years, they themselves can cause a wide variety of issues from cardiovascular
disease to arthritis in the spine and others.
So great, more bad news… and
what, Tune Chiropractic can help with all of that?
Yes. I’ve mentioned before (ad nauseum) to my
knowledge my grandfather never had chiropractic care and lived to 95, but I
know personally people I sincerely believe would not be alive today without
chiropractic. So, for some, chiropractic
may very well add years to one’s life, it isn’t necessarily true for
everyone. What I do firmly believe is
true for most, if not all is that with chiropractic care; or at the very least,
rigorous conscientiousness regarding one’s physical, and emotional health can
make life much better for the amount of time we do have. Chiropractors can help give ergonomic,
nutritional, and exercise advise. We can
help your body “pump the brakes” and help you get out of the fight or flight
mode. We help your body heal from the
inside out.
In future posts, we’ll get more
specific with suggestions how you can achieve your best health, but for now, if
you have any questions you can call or message me on Face Book or stop in or
you can just leave a comment below. I’m
happy to give any advice or point you in the right direction for anything you
may be curious about.
